When visiting Enfield in County Meath, check out some of the town's industrial heritage showcased in the fine old Midland Great Western Railway buildings.
A few kilometres further on, the Blackwater Aqueduct carries the canal over the Blackwater River. You may even spot a barge at the Hill of Down before you travel to Killucan. This quiet section of Greenway is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in nature.
Thomastown marks the end of 32 entirely flat kilometres, uninterrupted by locks. At the flight of locks, eight locks in quick succession raise the level of the canal significantly and this is the only part of the Greenway that could be considered a hill. Shortly after, the canal passes serenely under the M4, through The Downs and on to Mullingar.
