The Shannonbridge Fortifications are located in Shannonbridge, County Roscommon. The main building of these Napoleonic fortifications houses a free exhibition, River Café and gift shop as well as a self guided tour around the fort.

The Shannonbridge Fortifications sit on the banks of the River Shannon and is described as one of the most iconic buildings along the river.

These Napoleonic fortifications were built by the British military and date from 1810. The structure protected the bridge against a French invasion from the west. In military terms, the fortifications at Shannonbridge are known as a Tete de Pont, which means bridgehead defence. They have been described as one of the best examples of Napoleonic fortifications in the British Isles.

The main building of The Fort was restored by Fergal and Linda Moran and it is the perfect place to stop and visit when in the area.

Visit the free exhibition in the main building of the Fortifications. This gives you an insight into why these Napoleonic fortifications were built along the River Shannon. You can also follow the self guided walk around the fort.

There is a café and gift shop located within the Fortifications. The River Café is open daily from Easter to October with a great selection of light bites, big bites, sweet treats, pizzas and daily specials. It is a perfect stop for small and large groups with seating outside overlooking the River Shannon. The gift shop stocks a selection of Irish crafts, books and jewellery.
