Taking three days to complete, this pleasant linear route starts in Limerick City and ends in Dromineer, County Tipperary.
The majestic Lough Derg Way follows a mix of riverbank, canal bank, forest track, old roadway and minor roads. Mainly canal and riverside paths at the southern end and mainly country roads at its northern end, some sections of the northern leg host fast-moving traffic. Approximately 55% of this route follows local roads.
Best accessed from one of the five trailheads (Limerick City, Clonlara, Killaloe/Ballina, Garrykennedy, Dromineer), this walk follows the River Shannon and its canals northwestwards to the lake port of Dromineer on stunning Lough Derg. Passing quaint villages and heritage towns along the way, you’ll enjoy picturesque landscapes at every turn.
The route’s trailheads are located reasonably close to services and facilities like shops and accommodation. You’ll also have your pick of welcoming pubs and restaurants to relax in.
- The tiny marina of Garrykennedy, one of the route’s trailheads, is home to some delightfully old-fashioned country pubs and incredible lakeshore views too.
